Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre is the home of our fleet of AC electric locomotives, and is the last surviving operational Roundhouse in the UK. It was opened in 1870 to house locomotives for the local iron and coal industries - a role which it continued to fulfil for over 110 years until 1983 when it lost its locomotive allocation. The depot remained as a stabling point for another eight years until closure in 1991.
The Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society, which formed in 1989 in anticipation of closure, then spent five years campaigning to prevent the shed being demolished, finally securing Grade 2 listed status as the bulldozers moved in. The first preserved vehicles moved in during 1998, and since then the centre has become a major commercial maintenance and storage site in addition to its heritage role.
