2000 Vandalism to 304021 at Crewe

Galleries: (choose from the list)

A pristine 304021 was preserved in 1998 by the Class 304 Group, but after all but one of those involved in the project vanished (without contributing a penny!) the owner approached the AC Loco Group for assistance.

We were able to negotiate a home for the unit, but were repeatedly prevented from moving it there, being given one excuse after another. Eventually that location backtracked on its promise, but by that time the unit had been heavily vandalised whilst waiting at Crewe. Graffiti, broken windows and the resulting weather damage meant a small fortune would have been required to restore the unit back to the condition in which it was bought. This, coupled with no alternative home to go to, and a deadline for removing the unit from Crewe meant that, shortly after these photos were taken, the unit was disposed of for scrap.

The other end of the unit. This end was the least damaged, with its cab and leading saloon windows all still in place. Beyond the toilets, however, all the windows were broken or crazed.
