2004 Railfest 2004, National Railway Museum

Galleries: (choose from the list)

The National Railway Museum celebrated 200 years of traction with a spectacular nine-day event at York, from 29th May to 6th June 2004. The NRM requested 84001 for display at the event - unfortunately since completion of its repaint the previous summer, the original equipment side paint had started to flake off (just as the corridor side had done previously), and this meant that the whole side had to be chipped off and repainted from scratch: something we could have done without.

After a fairly frantic bout of restoration, we were able to send 84001 for display looking its best. We were present throughout the event with our sales stand and in the cabs of 84001.

84001 was positioned alongside 92203 and 30777. Interestingly, the 9F is only about one year older than the 84.

A close up of 84001, now complete with a second repaint in as many years, and its BR emblems in place.

Visits to 84001's cab proved very popular.

From 84001's window, older electric exhibits were visible. On the left is ex-Harton Colliery No.4, whilst EM2 27000 is on the right.
