Power for the train was provided by 89001. Also in the formation was Locomotive Services Ltd's 87002, dead in the train as insurance. This was a further test run for 89001 including testing the 89's Time Division Multiplex (TDM) system, with 82139 controlling the 89 between Crewe and Stafford.
