In late January 2008, the final Bulgaria-bound Class 87s were removed from Wembley bound for Long Marston for attention prior to new leases of life. 87002, which carried the group's name from April 2005 until early 2008, went with them. While this was going on, the group negotiated for the loco's retention in the UK for preservation, and the paperwork was finally completed in April 2008. With an E-exam underway and OTMR equipment fitted in early 2008, 87002 was readied for a return to the UK main line.
